Google's Latest Update: How Social Media Impacts Search Visibility

It’s no secret that search behavior has changed drastically over the past few years. And it’s not just behavior; the platforms themselves have changed as well. Type “best electrolytes for women” into Google search, you’ll now get an automatic AI overview, and possibly be served an answer in the form of a TikTok video or Instagram post. Depending on where they fall on the love/hate spectrum with AI, the average consumer might not give this much thought. Marketing teams, however, have been tracking this shift for years.

There has been a clear shift toward users treating social media apps as their main search engine, pushing Google to increasingly pull results from these platforms. For years, social media teams have argued that social content drives discovery, and now with social content being indexed in Google results and AI overviews, search is driving social reach, making the relationship between social and search inextricable.

Despite this awareness, there has been a gap in teams’ abilities to track this relationship, until now.

What Changed

Google Search Console launched a Platform properties option for Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube accounts, allowing businesses to see how their posts perform in Google Search for driving brand discovery.

This tool has strengthened reporting on three different fronts:

Performance reports give you a full picture of clicks, impressions, and related metrics, with the ability to filter and sort by post or search term to see exactly what's driving traffic. Data can also be exported for deeper analysis elsewhere.

The Insights report shows recent traffic trends, your top-performing posts, and how users are discovering your account through Google.

Achievements track progress toward key milestones — for example, hitting a new total-click threshold from Search within a rolling 28-day window.

What does this mean for businesses? For years, marketers could only make inferences about the relationship between social media influence and search behavior. Now, that guesswork has shifted to proof where businesses can identify the exact search queries leading users to their posts and the exact posts leading users to their site.

As of last week, this feature has officially rolled out to all users.

Why It Matters

Developing Data-Backed Marketing Strategies

With more solidified data on social media insights, businesses can identify which posts are driving clicks and appearing in search results. Teams can home in on high-performing themes, concepts, and formats. These insights can also inform product messaging. If a post is gaining traction in Search, it’s an indication that the concept is something customers are truly looking for.

SEO Infiltrates Social Media

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has traditionally focused on optimizing website content; however, optimizing social media content for keywords and search terms has become essential. By pulling data from platforms beyond their own web index, Google is becoming more comprehensive – and businesses need to focus on optimizing social media content in the same way they’ve optimized their webpages.

Leveling the Playing Field

Not all businesses have the resources to build and manage SEO on their website, but they are often present on social media. This is a unique opportunity that makes it possible for such businesses to have reliable means to measure their search presence without having a website or an SEO expert on hand. It places small brands on the same page as their larger, more resourced competitors without ad spend or PR.

Strengthening Budget Decisions

Budget conversations get less speculative. Instead of arguing that social "probably" helps search visibility, teams can point to impressions tied to specific content and make the case for where dollars should go next.

What to Do Now

Add Social Platforms To Your Properties

In Search Console, look for the “Platform Properties” option under "Add Property". You'll be able to select Instagram, TikTok, X or YouTube directly.

Connect and verify each social account by following Google's prompts to confirm ownership. It will take about 48 hours for the data to populate initially.

Educate Your Teams About How Google Indexes Social Media Content.

Google ranks social posts using captions, usernames, bios, geo-tags, hashtags, and engagement signals. Get social and SEO teams talking to each other today - captions and hashtags need the same keyword thinking once reserved for meta descriptions, built around both trending and evergreen search terms.

The Bottom Line

What’s clear is that the boundaries between social and search strategies will continue to blur. In other words, social media can no longer be perceived as a separate and distinct channel from the rest of a marketing ecosystem.

This feature will almost certainly expand - more platforms, deeper integration with existing SEO tools and more sophisticated reporting. But the direction is already clear: the line between social strategy and search strategy is gone. Content made for TikTok, Instagram, X or YouTube now needs the same scrutiny as a web page, because as far as Google is concerned, it already gets it.
